ATMnet

TeleCHOICE represents ATMnet who are the premier internet provider for business applications. ATMnet is creating a "new" Internet- One with an emphasis on ATM switches. When packets leave your site, they travel directly to an ATM edge device in our network. Here, they are segmented and assembled into fixed size ATM cells and immediately enter the ATM switching fabric. The segmentation of the packets and ATM switching all occur within passive microchips. These microchips are not software controlled and, therefore, not limited by processor speed. ATM cells then traverse our OC3c 155 Mbps backbone and leave the ATM "cloud" at Internet exchange points around the country. Many of these exchange points are built around ATM switches, adding increased speed to the 'new' Internet.

In Contrast to our approach, most traditional service providers use a series of routers to move your packets to the Internet backbone. By the nature of router-based technology, every router in the chain must store the packet, open it, examine it's size and, finally, forward it to the appropriate port. Each of these functions is controlled by software and requires both processor power and time to execute. Current T-1s on the Internet traverse up to 30 routers before reaching their destination. Finally, for long-haul networking, legacy router-based backbones do not normally support networking speeds greater than DS3 (45 Mbps).
